Ladles at the Waterford Fair - Shot with the Polaroid PX-70 on The Impossible Project's PX 600 black frame poor pod silver shade film

I am in love with the wooden spoons made by Allegheny Treenware. They have a tent set up at the Waterford Fair every year and I always want to buy one (or ten) of these ladles and use them as bowls, perhaps for oatmeal. This photo was taken with my Polaroid SX-70 using the The Impossible Project’s “poor pod” film.

Note: Normally not into babyish voices, but I do like this Grimes song and it gets better as the song progresses.

A few weekends ago I went out to West Virginia with some friends and spent a wonderful time enjoying perfect weather with no bugs in a cabin that was remote and had an amazing view of Germany Valley. It was fantastic. The weather was so perfect that I slept out on the deck under the stars without any pesky bugs trying to suck my blood or go spelunking in my nasal passage.

While we were there we drove up to Blackwater Falls, where I took this photo on my finicky Holga. A while back I discovered that a roll of film had consumed one of the foam pieces in the camera, which led to some funky light leaks. This roll ate up the last remaining piece of foam, as you can see by the nice white sections at the top and bottom. I kind of like it, especially the “9.” that is showing through.

This is my friend in his sun/music room reflecting on his life . . . or just looking at a bug.

In other news, I have had the latest Metronomy album on repeat for a while now. I highly recommend it.

Do I hear crickets? Tumbleweeds? Yes . . . it’s been a bit since I updated the blog. It’s time to catch up!

A while back I ordered a six pack of “poor pod” film from The Impossible Project and was pleasantly surprised by my first photo. I thought for sure there would be strange undeveloped patches but so far I haven’t had that issue with this film. There have been issues with overexposure and blurriness, but that might be user error. If I had my way, all instant film would have this stylin’ black frame.

I took this photo back in January on one of the few snowy days we had in DC this winter, and am just catching up on scanning the rolls and cleaning them up. This is one of my favorites from that chilly walk.

Also, I know I post a lot of Benoît Pioulard on here, but I really like this cover he did of Broadcast’s “Until Then” after Trish Keenan died in January. If you like it, you can download it here.

As you can probably tell from previous posts, I have struggled a bit to get results I am happy with when using The Impossible Project’s film. I recently got my hands on their new PX 680 color test film and am really excited about it. I love the colors and the photos are coming out a lot clearer (this might be due to my new controlled way of covering the film when it is ejected from the camera, and not a new quality of the film). Can’t wait to shoot more of this film!

On another note, this bicycle looks really sad. I am surprised the seat is still on it.

The other day I showed my friend Hoi the pile of Polaroids I had gone through to select the twelve that will be in the Polaroid Retrospective II show (which opens Saturday, April 9th). It was interesting to see his reactions to the photos, because he was not as into some of the photos I had decided were definitely in, and he really liked some that I thought had too many things wrong with them . . . like this one. I still like this Polaroid, but for a number of reasons I didn’t think it would fit with the rest of the photos . . . so it’s going up here instead.

The image is dark brown because I was playing around with using a cold/hot clip to warm up the photo during development. I think it may have stayed under my arm a little too long, but I still like how it turned out . . . especially that unintentional !.

Polaroid Retrospective II

Polaroid Retrospective II

In the past several months I would estimate I’ve spent some 40ish hours driving around rural Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania taking Polaroids (and other photos). You can see some of these photos (including the previous post and the one below) in the upcoming Polaroid Retrospective II show opening April 9th at Lamont Bishop Gallery.

DeVotchKa – The Man From San Sebastian

I’ve been on a “wandering around rural Virginia” kick lately, piling up my car with cameras and stopping at almost every barn I see. Here is a photo I took on Color Shade PUSH! film. The left photo was scanned around six hours after I took it and the right photo was scanned a month later. This is one of the first Color Shade photos I’ve taken that I like. I’ve been having fun messing around with the film, trying to get more saturation in my images, but as of now I like the less saturated images better (like this one).

Note: I will have photos in an instant film exhibit opening April 9th at Lamont Bishop Gallery. This photo will undoubtedly will be in it. More details will be posted as soon as I have them.

Note 2: I love this DeVotchKa song. If you have a chance to see them live I recommend it.

I’m not sure what it is, but I’ve been drawn to photographing bare branches this winter. Here are some I shot with the Mamiya m645 on Kodak 100 TMAX film back in November and just got around to scanning.
