I had my head in the clouds (Cumulus Ramunimbus)

It’s been three years since I started this blog and I am looking forward to continuing the “weekly” projects in the years to come. There is no song today since I used up all of my good Halloween songs last year.

This year for Halloween I had my head in the clouds and spent an amazing evening among some pretty creative costumes (a guy you can count on, political puppet, double rainbow, Benoit Mandelbrot). Below, you can see the raw materials for my costume and the final product, as well as my jack o’ lantern for this year (although I have to say I like last year’s better). You can’t tell from the photo, but the mouth goes all the way around the pumpkin.

Thank you for checking out the blog and being patient with my sometimes inconsistent updates. Here is hoping this year I can really make them weekly projects.

In a couple hours this pile of styrofoam and batting would become by cloud

I wasn’t sure it would happen, but I am all caught up on this year’s posts. They may not have been posted every seven days as I initially intended, but at least I posted 52 in a year.

This is the Lake Point Tower in Chicago shot on my Mamiya m645 with Kodak Portra 400VC . . . check out those curves.

Here is another photo from a morning on Cape Hatteras. The campsite we stayed at was maybe a quarter mile from the beach, so we had to walk on this boardwalk to get through the tall grasses (covered in gorgeous spiderwebs) and over the dunes. The fog was magnificent and probably was not the best thing for my cameras . . . oh well.

Oh Cape Hatteras, how I love thee. I would be a very happy camper if I could jump into the ocean every day and look at the milky way from the beach every night. A few years back I went camping on Cape Hatteras for one night and swore I would go back. The stars were ridiculous, and as if they weren’t enough, there were bioluminescent plankton in the sand and water, so whenever you would step on them (or agitate them) they would light up yellow. My mind was blown.

This year I went back with a few friends in hopes to find the same amazing stars in the sky and sand (too cheesy?) and was not disappointed. Giddiness abounded. I spent as much time as possible playing in the ocean and looking at the stars and am already looking forward to next year’s trip.

Wandering the streets of Chicago I found this wig shop where you can buy wigs on layaway. Sign me up! Sometimes you just need to have that platinum “Zury” hairdo.

Note: I saw Jon Hopkins open for Four Tet the other night. He was pretty fantastic and bouncy, which is always fun to see when watching an electronic live act (sometimes they just hide behind their nobs and there isn’t much to see). This is definitely not one of the more lively songs but I still like it.

I spent a nice afternoon outside at a coffee shop the other day with my Moleskine sketchbook, Micron pens and a delicious cappuccino. While doodling I overheard a few conversations. One man started up a talking with (more like at) a nearby student (who clearly wanted to finish studying about Ukraine) about the entire history of Russia and Ukraine. He proceeded to go on about his house in France that has been in the family since before the French Revolution. A pair of women on the other side of me were catching up after six years of not seeing one another. One of them had the habit of saying “dude” at least every few minutes, if not more.

Dude.

Note: If you are just joining and notice I have been posting far more often than usual it’s because my blog’s three year anniversary is next Sunday and I need to make up for all those weeks I missed this year . . . and there were quite a few. Starting next Sunday this blog will resume its regularly scheduled programming.

These are quite possibly the coolest mannequins I have ever seen. I wish I could remember where I saw these, but all I know is they were somewhere in Chelsea (NYC) in September.

Where do mannequins go after they are no longer needed? I would be more than happy to take a few off of the shop’s hands.

Note: I just got the new Benoît Pioulard album Lasted and am very excited. It has been on repeat and this is one of my favorite songs off the latest album.

This is the Chicago Fire Department. When I finally buy (and learn how to play) a bass guitar, it will be the colors of the Chicago Fire Department building.
